Range and Identity
Etelis radiosus occurs from the Sri Lankan region across the Indo-Pacific toward Samoa, north to the Ryukyus and south toward Australia. It should remain separate from other ruby snappers. A similar red appearance or a shared fishing ground does not establish the same scientific identity.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit rocky bottoms. The depth and substrate of a capture are valuable context because a landed fish no longer shows its original position in the water. Record those details when available rather than infer a shallow setting from a photograph taken beside a boat or dock.
Food and Life History
The maximum reference is eighty centimeters standard length, with a common reference of fifty centimeters using the same convention. Standard length ends at the tail base. A maximum weight is not inferred from these lengths or transferred from another large Etelis species.
Field Note
Keep the standard-length label with the measurement. It allows comparisons without silently treating a tail-excluding measurement as the fish’s full total length.
