Notropis rubellus is the identity retained here. Historical accounts extend across a large eastern and central North American area, but that coverage can include populations recognized differently today. An old regional record should retain its original determination rather than automatically defining the modern species range.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults in the traditional account use rocky runs and flowing pools in small to medium rivers. Clear upland streams with fast current are prominent settings. These habitat observations are useful context but do not resolve the species identity of every similar shiner in such water.

A maximum length from a broad potentially mixed account is not assigned as a verified modern limit here.
