Range and Identity
Moxostoma carinatum occurs in parts of the St. Lawrence, Great Lakes and Mississippi basins and selected Gulf-draining rivers. Other redhorses can look similar, so a complete species determination is important. Locality and mouth features add information beyond a reddish tail or general sucker shape.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit rocky pools and swift runs, with impoundment records as well. These are different current settings within a broad river-associated habitat. A pool record should not be used to erase the species’ documented use of more rapidly flowing water.
Food and Life History
Small bivalves are recorded adult foods. The compiled upper references are seventy-seven centimeters total length and 4.2 kilograms. These separate values are reference measurements rather than a current certified angling record, and a universal seasonal movement route is not inferred from them.
Field Note
Include mouth details and the river system with an identification image. Redhorse records are more useful when the features separating similar species can be reviewed.
