Range and Identity
Siganus vermiculatus is recorded across parts of the Indo-West Pacific. Some peripheral island records remain questioned in the source and are not treated as confirmed range extensions. A named locality is preferable to assuming occurrence throughout every intervening reef region.
Habitat and Behavior
Juveniles inhabit mangroves before larger fish move into lagoon and coastal reef settings. Adults can use areas with strong current. Algae growing on seagrass, roots and rocks provide food, making the grazing surface as informative as the broader habitat category.
Food and Life History
Adults can gather in large breeding groups, with pairs separating to spawn adhesive bottom eggs. Regional summer and lunar timing should not be applied universally. Upper references are forty-five centimeters total length and 2.4 kilograms, independent values rather than measurements necessarily from one fish.
Field Note
Record life stage and the grazing surface when possible. A juvenile among mangrove roots and an adult near a reef can represent connected stages of this species’ life.
