Range and Identity
Percina crassa occurs in the Cape Fear, Pee Dee and Santee drainage region. The common Piedmont name is broader than an individual river system, so precise locality is useful. Other darters from nearby streams should not be combined merely because they occupy the same landscape.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit rocky riffles and runs in small to medium rivers. These are flowing channel features, and local current and substrate add detail to a collection. A pool elsewhere in the same river does not necessarily describe the setting in which the fish was observed.
Food and Life History
The compiled maximum is nine centimeters total length, with a common reference of 5.8 centimeters. No maximum mass is calculated from those values. The sparse account does not provide a quantified diet or a complete breeding calendar, so those details are not transferred from another Percina species.
