Range and Identity
The scientific name is Noturus placidus. Recorded systems include the Neosho, Cottonwood, Spring and lower Illinois rivers in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Keeping the parent drainage with a locality helps distinguish this fish from other madtoms found across the region.
Habitat and Behavior
Gravel riffles and runs provide recorded habitat. These are flowing sections where substrate and current are useful parts of an observation. A general statement that the fish came from a river misses the smaller habitat features that distinguish an individual collection site.
Size and Life-History Records
The compiled maximum is 8.7 centimeters total length, while the common reference is substantially smaller at 4.2 centimeters. Those figures describe a small-bodied species rather than an expected catch size. A maximum mass is not calculated from either measurement or borrowed from another catfish.
Field Note
Retain the stream name, gravel conditions and current with each record. Several small catfishes can occur within the same larger river basin.
