Range and Identity
Noturus albater occurs in the upper White and Little Red river systems of Missouri and Arkansas. It should remain distinct from Ouachita Madtom and other regional catfishes. A precise tributary is useful when several similarly sized madtoms are possible within the wider Ozark region.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occupy clear, cool, swift creeks and small to medium rivers, including rocky riffles and pools. These channel features differ in depth and local flow. A pool observation is not inconsistent with a species account that also emphasizes fast water elsewhere in the stream.
