Lower Stream Identity
The scientific name is Stenogobius hawaiiensis. Records occur in lower stream reaches and adjoining brackish areas. A Hawaiian island name alone does not identify the species because other gobies occupy different elevations and current settings within the same watershed.
Climbing and Habitat
The account describes a poor climber, which helps explain its lower-stream distribution. Both altered and unaltered streams are used. This does not establish that every kind of disturbance is harmless, only that records are not confined to one pristine-habitat category.
Bottom Feeding and Size
The species feeds along the bottom on filamentous algae, worms, crustaceans and insect larvae. The maximum reference is 11.4 centimeters standard length. Preserve that tail-base endpoint when comparing measurements with total-length values from other Hawaiian stream fishes.
Keep the Stream Elevation
Lower-reach habitat is a useful clue, but it should accompany diagnostic features. Preserve both location within the stream and fish identity.
