Identity and Range
This profile covers Stiphodon caeruleus, described in 1993. Blue aquarium gobies sold under similar names are not necessarily this species. Older summaries emphasize Pohnpei, but a later population study included fish from both Pohnpei and Kosrae.
Size and Weight
The published maximum standard length is 3.9 cm, about 1.5 inches. Standard length excludes the tail fin, so this is not a maximum total-length measurement. A dependable maximum individual weight was not established. Its small size is a reason to be especially cautious with estimates copied from other gobies.
Streams and the Sea
The species is amphidromous: its development connects stream and marine environments. Genetic research examined 208 specimens from 15 localities and found little differentiation among the sampled streams and islands in the mitochondrial markers tested. The results are consistent with larval exchange, although they do not track the journey of any individual fish.
Observation and Feeding Information
A species-specific wild diet account and a tested recreational bait recommendation were not verified for this profile. Aquarium feeding guidance for another Stiphodon should not be presented as direct evidence for this fish. Correct identification and a documented location are more useful than a generic blue-goby label.
Tiny Fish, Connections Beyond One Stream
A stream population can be part of a larger island-to-island system. The genetic study supports shared ancestry and possible larval recruitment between streams. Its authors also called for additional genetic work, so the result should not be overstated as proof that every population freely interbreeds today.
