River Distribution
The species is Macrhybopsis boschungi. Records include larger rivers and the lowest reaches of major tributaries in the lower Mobile system. Its below-Fall-Line distribution should not be expanded automatically to all headwater creeks in the same basin.
Current and Bottom
Moderately clear to turbid water is used over mixtures of gravel, sand and silt. Moderate to strong current is characteristic. These observations show why water clarity alone should not determine whether a river record is consistent with the species’ habitat.
Size and Similar Species
The descriptive female reference is 5.7 centimeters standard length, larger than the 4.7-centimeter male value. The species occurs with a related chub in part of the Cahaba system, so shared locality does not eliminate the need for diagnostic identification.
Keep the Larger Female Reference
When male and female values use the same length convention, retain the larger supported female size rather than only the first listed value.
