Macrhybopsis australis is the scientific identity retained for Prairie Chub. Several related chubs have been separated or renamed in modern treatments. A broad record labeled chub, or a locality attached to another Macrhybopsis name, should not be silently reassigned to this species.
Habitat and Behavior
The upper Red River provides the geographic framework of the retrieved account. A drainage-level range does not establish occupancy in every tributary, pool or reservoir. Exact river reach and collection date are useful evidence, especially when comparing surveys conducted before and after taxonomic revisions.
Food and Life History
The compiled maximum is seven centimeters total length. The available summary gives limited species-specific ecology, so a detailed diet, flow requirement or spawning mechanism is not transferred from Peppered Chub merely because the fishes are related. No maximum mass is estimated from the length.
