Broad Freshwater Range
The species occurs widely across northern North America. Its lake-based common name does not exclude rivers and streams. A record should retain the actual waterbody and habitat rather than assuming every individual belongs to a permanent open-lake population.
Depth and Season
Shallow areas provide common habitat, while deeper water may be used during warmer conditions. These changes make observation date and depth useful context. A fish recorded farther below the surface in summer need not contradict a shallow-water description from a cooler season.
Food and Size
The diet includes zooplankton, insects, algae and small fish. Spawning movements toward shallow areas are reported. The compiled maximum is 23 centimeters total length, an upper reference rather than a typical size for every school encountered near a shore or stream bank.

Lake Chub habitat can shift with warming. Depth and date make a record more informative than the lake or river name alone.
