Lowland Distribution
The range includes the Mississippi embayment and Gulf-draining rivers, with additional records in the Red, Arkansas, Wabash and Green systems. These separate drainages should remain visible when comparing collections. A broad southeastern label cannot identify the population by itself.
Current and Cover
Adults occupy small to medium rivers over sand and gravel, usually near debris. The current and shelter work together in this setting. A piece of submerged wood within a run should not be described as stagnant pond habitat simply because it provides cover.
Feeding and Length
Immature aquatic insects are the recorded foods, including midges, blackflies, caddisflies and mayflies. The reference maximum is 7.7 centimeters total length, compared with a common length of 5.4 centimeters. A close side image and precise drainage support comparisons among small darters.
Keep the Debris Detail
Sand, gravel and submerged cover describe different parts of the same habitat. Including all three makes a Harlequin Darter record more useful.
