Breeding Colors
The first dorsal fin has an orange band bordered by dark bands. Blue appears on parts of the cheek and gill cover but not uniformly over the lips and underside of the head. These distinctions are more useful than describing every colorful male simply as blue and orange.
Regional Identity
The species was described in a study separating several closely related darters. Its Ozark drainage context belongs with the diagnostic features. Older records assigned to a broader relative should not be transferred automatically without considering which populations the revised name includes.
Measurements and Detail
The descriptive male reference reaches 4.3 centimeters standard length, with a slightly smaller female value. An incomplete lateral line and cheek scalation add identification detail. Such features may require close examination beyond what an ordinary distant stream photograph can establish.
Use Color and Structure Together
Facial color, dorsal bands and scale characters offer a stronger comparison than one bright fin patch considered in isolation.
