A Specific River System
The range is centered on the Catawba system in North Carolina and South Carolina. That is narrower than the entire Santee drainage or all waters in either state. Historical records should retain their tributary so the geographic scope can be checked. Some current summaries use the combination Hydrophlox chlorocephalus; the inventory name is retained here.
Stream Habitat
Adults occur in headwaters, creeks and small rivers where pools retain flow across rocky bottom. A flowing pool differs from a stagnant backwater, even when both look sheltered. Notes on clarity, current and substrate make the habitat description more precise.
Size and Comparisons
The reference maximum is 7.2 centimeters total length. The species should remain separate from Greenfin Shiner, which belongs to a different genus in this inventory. Similar color terms in their common names are not sufficient evidence for combining observations or measurements.
