Atlantic Range
The northern range includes Canadian Atlantic waters, while southern records extend toward northeastern Florida. Nearshore occurrence becomes less frequent south of North Carolina. Latitude and depth should therefore be considered together when interpreting a catch location.
Bottom Setting
Goosefish occurs across continental-shelf habitat and into deeper water. It tolerates a substantial range of temperatures, so a single temperature reading does not define its entire habitat. Capture depth and bottom location add useful context to a regional observation.
Eggs and Size
Eggs are released in long, ribbon-shaped veils rather than deposited in a small guarded cavity. The compiled maximum is 120 centimeters total length, and the separate published weight reaches 22.6 kilograms. These are upper reference values, not expected sizes for every adult.
Preserve Latitude and Depth
A southern offshore record and a northern shelf record may reflect the species’ changing depth distribution rather than conflicting habitat accounts.
