Identification
The scientific name Sladenia shaefersi is essential because other Sladenia species occur in different oceans. A broad head, large mouth and modified fins give the fish an unusual outline. A head-mounted angling structure is part of its feeding anatomy.
Size and Weight
A Caribbean species account lists an upper length of 101 cm, about 39.8 inches. An older summary lists only 28 cm standard length; that small specimen-based figure should not be used as the species’ absolute size limit. A dependable maximum weight was not established.
Habitat and Feeding
Records come from deep marine habitats, including reef-associated bottoms. Accounts describe a predator that remains still and waits for nearby prey. The head-mounted lure may help bring prey close, but a detailed species-specific menu is less securely documented than its bottom-associated hunting posture.
Deep-Sea Observation
Remotely operated vehicles have recorded this fish in place, providing information that a preserved specimen cannot. These observations concern deep ocean habitat, not an inland recreational fishery. Similar-looking fish filmed in the Pacific should not automatically be assigned to this Atlantic species.
A Fish That Can Walk Along the Bottom
NOAA exploration footage shows the modified fins supporting movement on the seafloor. This behavior fits a fish that spends much of its time in close contact with deep bottom habitat rather than swimming continuously in open water.
