Range and Identity
Cryptopsaras couesii is recorded circumglobally in tropical and subtropical ocean regions. That broad distribution does not mean the sexes or life stages are encountered equally. A small male and a large female can look so different that their measurements require explicit sex labels.
Habitat and Behavior
The account describes dwarf males becoming parasitic on females. Free-living males are much smaller than the largest female reference. These are sex and developmental distinctions, not conflicting measurements of a typical adult body size.
Food and Life History
The upper female reference is forty-four centimeters total length, exceeding the 7.3-centimeter male or unsexed header value. Females lay eggs and larvae are planktonic. Floating gelatinous egg rafts are proposed in the summary, but are not treated as a directly confirmed species-specific observation.

Always retain sex with a size record. Reporting only a small male measurement as the species maximum would substantially understate the documented size of females.
