Etheostoma swannanoa is recorded from upper Tennessee tributaries in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. A state name is less precise than the actual watershed. Neighboring Atlantic-draining streams should not be added to the range simply because they lie nearby.
Habitat and Behavior
The fish inhabits swift riffles over rubble in small to medium rivers. Both current and coarse bottom are part of the documented setting. A sheltered muddy pool elsewhere in the same river does not automatically represent equivalent habitat.
Food and Life History
The compiled maximum is nine centimeters total length, compared with seven centimeters as a common reference. The checked summary does not establish an independent maximum weight or a detailed feeding and breeding sequence. Those details are not borrowed from another riffle-dwelling darter.
