The Striated Frogfish

Striated Frogfish is a bottom-associated fish of reef and mixed-bottom habitats. Its eggs are released in a gelatinous ribbon or raft.

Range and Identity

Antennarius striatus has a broad compiled distribution in Atlantic and Indo-Pacific waters, excluding the eastern Pacific. Named localities span distinct coastal regions. A wide range does not establish equal abundance or identical habitat use throughout every intervening sea.

Habitat and Behavior

The species occurs around rocky and coral reefs over rock, sand or rubble. Weedy estuaries are also recorded in southern Africa. Both marine and brackish settings occur in the account, so a reef-only description would omit documented coastal habitat.

Food and Life History

The reported maximum is twenty-five centimeters total length, with ten centimeters as a common reference. A small published mass is not treated here as a secure maximum weight. The species lays eggs bound together in gelatinous material rather than separately attaching each egg to rock.

Field Note

Keep locality and substrate with photographs. A fish resting on sand near a reef remains consistent with the account, even when coral is absent from the immediate image.
