Range and Identity
Notropis hudsonius is recorded across broad northern and eastern North American drainage regions. The distribution includes both Atlantic-slope and interior systems, but locality remains essential when comparing records from widely separated waters. A shared common name does not establish a continuous population.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occupy sandy and rocky pools and runs in rivers of different sizes. They also occur along sandy or rocky lake shores, with creek records in Atlantic-slope systems. This variety shows why a river-only description would omit part of the species’ habitat.
Food and Life History
The reported maximum is fifteen centimeters total length, with nine centimeters as a common size. Insects and crustaceans are eaten alongside plants and algae. A maximum age of five years appears in the summary, while an independent maximum weight is not established.
