Range and Identity
Etheostoma squamiceps is recorded from portions of the lower Ohio region and the Red River system of the Cumberland drainage. The latter is not the larger Red River of the south-central United States. Keeping the full drainage name avoids a misleading geographic interpretation.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit headwaters, creeks and small rivers with rocky pools and neighboring riffles. These channel positions offer different local depths and current while occurring within one reach. A precise habitat observation is more informative than the word stream alone.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is 8.8 centimeters total length, with 4.6 centimeters as a common size. Eggs occur in clusters on the undersides of stones and are guarded by males. An independent maximum weight is not established in the summary.
