Range and Identity
Leiostomus xanthurus occurs along the western Atlantic and Gulf region. It can be confused with young croakers and Silver Perch, making the post-gill dark spot useful alongside the rest of the body. A common coastal location alone does not settle identification.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use sandy or muddy coastal bottom, and estuaries support feeding and nursery stages. North Carolina describes movement toward offshore water in winter and return of young to estuarine nurseries. That regional seasonal account should not be imposed unchanged on every population.
