The retained name Nothonotus microlepidus corresponds to the Smallscale Darter also treated as Etheostoma microlepidum. The compiled range includes western Kentucky and north-central Tennessee within the lower Cumberland drainage. A genus-name change does not by itself indicate a different fish population.
