Range and Identity
Periophthalmus argentilineatus is recorded broadly across the Indo-West Pacific. Regional identity and locality remain important within such a wide distribution. An observation from one mangrove coast should not define the exact environmental tolerances of all populations carrying this name.
Habitat and Behavior
The fish uses brackish mudflats and mangrove or nipa-palm areas, and can burrow into intertidal banks. It moves between pools and exposed surfaces and may enter lower freshwater reaches. Air breathing supports this amphibious activity, but a moist environment remains essential.
Food and Life History
The reported maximum is nineteen centimeters total length. Worms, crustaceans and insects are documented foods. Experimental or captive durations out of water are not presented as a universal time limit for wild fish because moisture and other conditions strongly affect the observation.
Field Note
Record tide state and whether the fish was feeding, resting or entering a burrow. Those details explain its use of the shore more clearly than simply noting that it was outside water.
