Range and Identity
Ambloplites ariommus occurs in selected Gulf-slope and lower Mississippi-associated drainage regions, including parts of the Ozark area. It is distinct from Rock Bass and other Ambloplites species. Their similar appearance does not justify transferring every range or size record to this entry.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit pools in creeks and small to medium rivers. Gravel, sand and mud are all recorded bottom materials, often with brush or vegetation nearby. These varied substrates indicate that the cover and pool setting are useful details alongside the bottom composition.
Food and Life History
The compiled upper references are 30.5 centimeters total length and 820 grams. Documented prey include darters, madtoms, minnows, crayfish, and dragonfly, mayfly and stonefly nymphs. The diet therefore spans both fishes and relatively large invertebrates.
Field Note
Record the nearby cover and identify the fish carefully before assigning an Ambloplites name. A small spotted sunfish from a brushy pool may need more than one photograph.
