Range and Identity
Eleginus gracilis is the retained identity. Its broad Arctic and North Pacific range needs care near taxonomically uncertain boundaries. The precise locality should remain attached to a record rather than treating every northern cod with a similar common name as the same species.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occupy shallow coastal waters and may ascend rivers, usually within tidal influence. Seasonal descriptions include movement inshore during winter and offshore for summer feeding. These observations should remain regional rather than imply that all individuals travel the same distance or use identical depths.
Food and Life History
Juveniles and adults feed opportunistically on animals near the bottom. Compiled upper references are fifty-five centimeters total length and 1.3 kilograms. Broad reproductive statements that mix geographic regions are not used to assign one exact spawning calendar or number of lifetime spawning events.
