Range and Identity
Ptychocheilus grandis occurs naturally in Sacramento-San Joaquin and neighboring central California systems, with introductions elsewhere, including the Eel River. Those histories should remain separate. The pikeminnow name describes a minnow-family fish rather than placing it among true pikes.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit rocky and sandy pools and runs in clear, warm streams and rivers. Small young use shallower water with cover and lower current. Studies indicate that the presence of larger fish can influence this juvenile habitat use, consistent with the risk of being eaten.
Food and Life History
Predation within the species helps explain why adults and young may occupy different parts of a reach. A very large length in a broad compilation is not retained without adequate corroboration. No maximum mass or exact breeding schedule is inferred from that uncertain number.
Field Note
Record fish size and available cover with a habitat observation. A sheltered juvenile and a large individual in a more open pool describe different ecological situations.
