Range and Identity
Prosopium coulterii occurs in separated areas including Lake Superior, western northern drainages, Alaska and parts of Russia. This pattern should not be described as an unbroken distribution through every intervening watershed. A specific lake or river is important context for biological observations.
Habitat and Behavior
Fish occupy lakes and rivers, with local habitat use differing among populations. Crustaceans and insects are recorded foods. The name Pygmy Whitefish does not distinguish a lake resident from a river fish by itself, so a record should retain the actual water body and setting.
Food and Life History
The maximum reference is twenty-eight centimeters total length, while a common reference is 11.5 centimeters. Early-winter spawning at night over gravel is reported. Broadcasting has been described as presumed in the summary, so the exact egg-release mechanism is not presented as directly confirmed for every population.
