Range and Identity
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is native to eastern Asia and has been introduced widely beyond that region. Aquarium and introduced records should not be added to its native distribution without qualification. The weatherfish name also requires species confirmation when related loaches occur in the same area.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occur in rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps and ricefields, often hiding in mud or leaf litter with only the head exposed. Air breathing is part of its biology, but it does not establish unlimited tolerance of poor water conditions or survival away from water.
Food and Life History
Foods include worms, small crustaceans, insects and their larvae. During spawning, a male wraps around a female as eggs and sperm are released. The upper reference is twenty-eight centimeters standard length; the common total-length value uses a different endpoint and cannot be compared directly.
Field Note
Record whether a fish was exposed or partly buried in sediment. Its hiding behavior can make a populated soft-bottom habitat appear empty during a brief survey.
