Range and Identity
Regalecus glesne is a widespread oceanic species, but not every ribbon-like deep-water fish is an oarfish. Identification should preserve the head, dorsal fin and body form. An old common-name report or a partial strandline remains record may not establish the full species identity.
Habitat and Behavior
Observed fish can hold a near-vertical posture in the water. Such observations are valuable, but a proposed feeding explanation should remain separate from what was directly seen. A stranded fish’s position on a beach does not describe its normal swimming posture.
Food and Life History
Small crustaceans and other small animals are recorded prey. The compiled upper references are eight meters total length and 272 kilograms, listed independently. Loss of the rear body can complicate measurements, so a shortened specimen should not be treated as evidence of an unusually short intact adult.
Field Note
Record whether the tail and posterior body are complete before comparing lengths. Missing tissue can make a long, slender fish especially difficult to measure reliably.
