Atlantic Distribution
The range includes the Gulf, Caribbean and western Atlantic toward Brazil, with abundance particularly associated with southern Florida and Caribbean island waters. A broad range should not be interpreted as equal abundance along every northern and southern coastline.
Juvenile and Adult Bottoms
Young use sandy vegetated areas, often with seagrass, while large adults occur among rocks and coral. Small aggregations can separate at night. These differences mean an individual’s size and observation time add useful context to a habitat record.
Feeding and Size
Fish, shrimp, crabs, cephalopods and gastropods are recorded prey taken during both day and night. The maximum references are 94 centimeters total length and 15.6 kilograms published weight. Preserve scientific identity before comparing those figures with maxima for other snappers.
