Basin Identity
The scientific name is Deltistes luxatus. Its native range includes the Lost River and connected upper Klamath-region waters in Oregon and California. Several sucker species occur in the region, so a local place name does not identify every large sucker as this species.
Deeper Freshwater Habitat
Adults occur in lakes and impoundments as well as deep pools of small to medium rivers. These are different waterbody settings within the same regional life-history account. Preserve the lake or river identity and actual depth when documenting a collection.
Size and Longevity
The compiled maximum is 86 centimeters total length, with a separate published weight of 4.5 kilograms. Long lifespans are reported for the species. Size alone cannot establish the age of an individual, and an upper reference should not be mistaken for the typical fish in every population.
