Identification and Range
The species is Catostomus snyderi, distinct from other large western suckers. Its relatively small downward-facing mouth and lip structure contribute to identification. The native range includes Oregon and northern California, with separate lake and river populations rather than one uniform habitat.
Food and Habitat
Adults graze on bottom invertebrates and algae, while young fish can feed heavily on zooplankton. Adults occur in rivers and lakes at different depths. These life-stage differences explain why one feeding description should not be imposed on all sizes.
Spawning and Measurements
Spring migrations into tributaries are documented in the upper Klamath region. The agency account reports lengths reaching fifty centimeters fork length, while a separate compilation uses total length. Preserve those endpoints rather than treating the two figures as contradictory measurements of the same fish.
Keep Fork and Total Length Separate
Fork length ends at the tail notch. It cannot be compared directly with a total-length measurement without retaining the distinction.
