Coastal Range
The distribution includes northeastern Florida, the northern Gulf and Caribbean coasts of Central and South America. The compiled account distinguishes these mainland coastal records from the West Indies. Precise geography is useful when several pipefish species occupy similar vegetation.
Plants and Salinity
Adults are common among plants in bays and estuaries, and the species also enters fresh water. A freshwater observation should therefore not be rejected merely because pipefishes are often associated with the sea. Salinity remains a valuable collection detail.

The male’s brood pouch lies under the tail and holds the eggs during development. The reference maximum is 18.3 centimeters standard length. A smaller common value in some summaries uses total length, so the two conventions should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
