Identification
Two or more dark stripes run along the body. A dark blotch occurs above the pectoral-fin base, and some anal-fin rays extend backward as long filaments. The common reference length is much smaller than the eight-centimeter maximum.
Vegetated Waters
The species occurs from Thailand toward Vietnam and in parts of the Sunda Islands. Sluggish streams, standing waters and flooded fields provide habitat. Air breathing helps it occupy settings where oxygen conditions can differ greatly from those of a clear, fast river.
Food and Nesting
Small crustaceans, zooplankton and insect larvae are reported foods. During reproduction, eggs that sink are collected and placed among the foam bubbles of the nest. Vegetation and sheltered water are therefore relevant to both everyday habitat and the reproductive setting.
