Coastal Distribution
The documented U.S. range follows the Gulf coast from southern Texas to Key West and continues up Florida’s Atlantic coast toward Cape Canaveral. Records also include Jamaica. Retaining the locality helps distinguish this fish from other small Gobiosoma species.
Sheltered Vegetation
Adults use seagrass beds and algal mats in very shallow, protected water. Bays and rivers also appear in published records. Although the fish generally favors fully saline water, brackish occurrences show that an estuary is not outside its possible habitat.
Size and Observation
At a common reference length under three centimeters, Code Goby can be hard to see among vegetation. The five-centimeter maximum includes the tail. A close photograph with a scale and a note about salinity offers better evidence than estimating length from an unscaled view through water.
