Range and Identity
Channa striata is treated in an Asian account extending from Pakistan toward Thailand and southern China. Introductions require their own identification evidence. An unusually large Hawaiian report is not used to establish a maximum for this inventory entry without resolving its species identity.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults favor still or sluggish muddy water, including swamps, canals and flooded fields. In seasonal settings they move into flooded areas and return as water recedes. Survival in mud during dry periods depends on moisture, not an unlimited ability to live in completely dry soil.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is one hundred centimeters standard length. A three-kilogram compilation value is not treated as a secure independent maximum. Recorded prey include fishes, frogs, insects and crustaceans. Young form surface schools guarded by the male in the described reproductive account.
Field Note
Keep species identification and measurement convention with large-fish reports. Snakehead common names and introduced populations are not sufficient grounds for transferring a record from one species to another.
