Identification
The first dorsal fin is large and triangular, while the second is much smaller. Its broad body, small eyes and lack of a ridge between the dorsal fins are useful features to inspect together. Color is gray above and pale below.
Size and Weight
The maximum reported total length is 400 cm, about 13.1 feet. The record listing checked gives 316.5 kg, approximately 697.8 pounds. Larger weight claims were not independently reconciled, so that documented record is distinguished from a biological maximum. Length and weight need not refer to the same animal.
Habitat and Natural Food
Bony fishes and smaller sharks dominate the diet. Coastal bays and estuaries are common habitat, and juveniles use low-salinity nursery areas. Some individuals move far into rivers, but that ability does not establish a population in every connected lake.
