Habitat
Rocky river reaches with rapids, well-oxygenated water and nearby forest are characteristic. Upstream feeding habitat and access toward lower river waters are both parts of its life history.
Natural Food
A Pacuare River study in Costa Rica found plant material, detritus and aquatic invertebrates in examined digestive tracts. Identified material included bryophytes, ferns and insect groups. These observations support an omnivorous diet rather than an exclusively algae-based one.
Reproduction and Fishing Context
Accounts describe downstream reproductive movement toward brackish waters during rainy months. Eggs are described as pelagic and nonadhesive. A species-specific angling bait or lure was not verified; stomach contents alone do not establish a best bait.
