Identification
Breeding males have blue on the lips and much of the lower face. The soft dorsal and anal fins carry blue near their bases. Distinct bright orange fin-ray spots, characteristic of some relatives, are absent.
Size and Weight
A taxonomic review measured its largest male at 54.5 mm standard length and its largest female at 49.5 mm, about 2.1 and 1.9 inches. These exclude the tail fin and are documented specimen maxima, not a proven biological limit. No measured maximum weight was verified.
Range and Identity
The recognized species occurs in the Clinch and Powell systems upstream of Norris Reservoir. It was historically combined with other members of the Speckled Darter group, so older records require taxonomic care.
Observation
A species-specific diet breakdown, detailed spawning account and angling bait recommendation were not verified. Photographing the full side and fins is more useful for identification than recording blue coloration alone.
