Identification
Five or six strong vertical bars mark the sides, with the first passing through the eye. A band continues into the front portion of the dorsal fin, helping distinguish this species from other little sunfishes. The dorsal fin has a conspicuous notch between its spiny and soft portions.
Size and Weight
The species maximum is 10 cm total length, about 3.9 inches. Virginia fish are commonly described at only 2–3 inches. A reliable maximum body weight was unavailable, so the profile does not borrow weights from larger sunfish species.
Habitat and Natural Food
Dense submerged vegetation offers feeding habitat and cover in calm, shallow water. Small invertebrates associated with plants are documented foods; Virginia also reports consumption of aquatic plant material. Tea staining and low pH are common habitat features, although not every occupied site is strongly acidic.
Observation and Conservation
This fish has localized populations and deserves an observation-focused approach. Virginia prohibits targeting it by angling. Its rarity and dense plant cover can make detection difficult even during professional surveys; a failed sighting does not necessarily demonstrate absence.

The strong bars are unusually conspicuous for such a small fish. Vegetation is more than a backdrop: it supplies cover, feeding surfaces and settings for the shallow nests guarded by males.
