Identification
The relatively deep body and rounded tail accompany gray, brown or olive mottling. Other cardinalfishes can have a similar outline. The Hawaiian identity Foa brachygramma should be kept separate from species elsewhere that were once included in broader treatments.
Size and Weight
The reported maximum standard length is 6.4 cm, approximately 2.5 inches without the tail fin. An observational account describes a total appearance approaching three inches. No dependable maximum weight was established.
Habitat
Shallow, sometimes murky coastal water with rubble and seaweed provides documented habitat. Cover and subdued coloration can make the fish difficult to spot. The presence of cover is more informative than assuming every cardinalfish occupies the same exposed reef setting.
Natural-History Focus
Hawaiian studies have examined how cardinalfishes use cover under changing light. That research should be read species by species. A detailed diet or mouthbrooding schedule for another cardinalfish is not automatically an established fact for Bay Cardinalfish.
Easy to Miss in the Shallows
This fish does not need deep water to be inconspicuous. Its mottled body and use of structurally complex cover can conceal it in shallow coastal habitat. A careful close view is often more useful than searching only open water.
