Identity
Mugilogobius cavifrons is a goby, despite mullet appearing in the common name. Its small size and unobtrusive coloration can make it easy to miss. A common name such as mangrove goby is not unique enough to identify every goby living among mangroves.
Size and Weight
The reported maximum total length is 4 cm, approximately 1.6 inches. A risk assessment describes it more generally as a small fish under 5 cm. These accounts are consistent with a tiny species; no dependable maximum weight was verified.
Habitat and Natural Food
Mud and sand in brackish or freshwater provide feeding habitat, often around mangroves. Worms and other small bottom invertebrates are documented prey. Records also include modified environments such as a concrete drainage canal.
Introduction and Observation
The species has an introduction history in Hawaii. Its presence in an altered habitat does not mean every disturbed stream is suitable or that impacts on native fishes are identical everywhere. Air-breathing information given for its genus is not enough to assign that trait to this species.
A Tiny Fish in an Unexpected Channel
A concrete drainage canal may seem an unlikely fish habitat, yet the species has been recorded in one. Such observations broaden its habitat picture without proving that artificial channels replace the ecological functions of natural coastal wetlands.
